How Yogafest Retreat Somers Started

Yogafest Retreat Somers is a sensational weekend away, where beginners to long-time committed yogis come together to celebrate all elements of yoga and a yogic life.

One of Melbourne’s most formidable yoga teachers, Eugenie Knox – founder of Dance of Life, Fitzroy – initiated the first Yogafest in 2005 out of the desire to create a community-based yoga retreat to raise funds for the Asian Tsunami victims. The first Yogafest was such a success that we simply kept going!

Since this first event each retreat has continued as a fundraising event with all money raised going directly towards Amma’s Ashram in Melbourne and their outreach programs serving those in need in our own community.

Sharing & Learning

Each yoga retreat presents a theme looking at aspects of yoga and living with awareness in our world today. We ensure the program has a range of classes and workshops to enhance this learning experience, making the teachings and the sharing of knowledge available to us all.

We also have a wonderful onsite library filled with seminal texts, engaging reads, and insightful publications for all to enjoy over the weekend.

Our next event focuses on a particular theme. Check out the program page for all details on what’s coming up.

What to Expect

A typical day at our yoga retreat starts with morning contemplative meditation, followed by chai and two-hour yoga asana classes. For the rest of the day participants choose from inspiring workshops, guided beach walks, pranayama and relaxation classes or do more yoga! Alternatively there lots of time to simply relax, enjoy the beautiful native bushland surrounds, reflect in the onsite library or sit by the beach right on the camp’s doorstep. Evening activities often involve chanting, lectures or performances.

Participants are asked to contribute a couple of hours of work (chopping vegetables, cleaning dishes, loading the dishwasher etc.) over the weekend, to help with the smooth running of the retreat. It’s our Karma Yoga as part of our yogic life, and it’s a wonderful way to give back to each other and to share the retreat experience.

Giving Back

All money raised from our yoga retreat goes to Amma’s charitable activities in Australia, under Amma’s instructions. Your money will help to support the Australian Ashram Building fund including establishing a large scale kitchen. The Ashram conducts projects like the Breakfast Club, providing breakfasts before school for children in need and “Amma’s Kitchen”, which offers free lunches to the needy in Collingwood. Yogafest Retreat Somers is run fully by volunteers, including all the staff (event production, teachers and cooks), so that as a community together, we are all giving back to our community in need at large.
